Simplicity Church Network: Our Vision and Foundations

Getting back on track

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.  Last Wednesday and Thursday were difficult days for me. I could not escape negative thoughts. I felt overwhelmed by everything, and as much as I want to see things through, I found myself wanting to give up at the same time. I knew I was struggling, so I entered Thursday evening’s prayer time empty and open. As we began to pray, the prayers began to focus on me and my lack of strength. Before long a new voice joined us and I heard someone praying in tongues as I was praying. All of the sudden I found myself out of words, but our guest simply picked up where I had left off. As our prayer time went on, the group laid hands on me, anointed my head, lips, ears and hands with oil and helped me recommit myself to the battle for this city. As we entered into Friday, I had a new outlook and a fresh wind in my sails. Before the day was over, God had answered Carol’s prayer for the provision of school supplies. A friend had called burdened that she and her husband were to provide our children’s school supplies. Carol had not even mentioned the need to them. Over the last few weeks, several who have been praying for me from all of the world, had been speaking a word to me that dealt with trust and not abandoning my call. Carol also began sharing with me, that the Lord was leading her to pray for the shutting of all of the potential doors of employment. In light of our current financial situation, it seemed suicidal to pray that way, but I was wrestling with the same question. Sunday, the Lord gave me the clarity I had been asking for…in the form of loving correction. The Lord rebuked Carol and I through my primary prayer intercessor. The issue came down to trust, I had given up on trusting God and have been trying to make my own way through this job search. The Lord reminded me that He conquered death and hell, raised Lazarus from the dead and multiplied loaves and fishes; yet, our actions were denying that very power in our own life and circumstance. Carol reminded me that Paul’s tentmaking went with him everywhere he went. She pointed out that all of the businesses the Lord has entrusted me with go around the world with me. I have done work from Asia and Africa when I have been before. She also acknowledged that we had tried to make these businesses work in our own wisdom and it simply had not worked. We both realized that we needed to repent…for grieving God and walking in our own understanding. We repented together and asked the Lord to shut the doors He never intended for us to open. We realize that God has to be our all. He can’t be our #1 priority, the top of our list or any other position…He must be everything. We have to rely on Him for everything. He reminded me of something I’ve often said from the pulpit: “How can you trust God with your eternal salvation, if you can’t trust Him with the smallest details of everyday life?” How true this is…how can I teach the stories of Abraham, Noah, Moses, Elijah, David, Peter & Paul while not trusting in the same God who was there every step of the way for them, to be there every step of the way for me? The icing on the cake for the weekend came last night. As we were coming home from the baseball game, we were discussing our prayer time on Thursday evening. Carol and I got to discussing the praying in tongues that our guest was doing. Collin, interrupted and asked when she was praying in tongues, because he only heard her speaking English the whole time. I quizzed him about some specific times that she was praying and he again indicated he had heard the whole thing in English. Carol and I both find ourselves amazed at what God has been doing in him already at such an early age.

Reflections on Our Journey and Vision

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.  Last week I was so excited about the young man who had returned. I took him to Alice to see family and he returned to Corpus Christi with me that afternoon, because he knew it was in his best interest. Unfortunately, I learned a day later that he had already been kicked out of the mission and was back on the streets. I continue to pray for the Lord’s powerful touch on the lives of the people here. Saturday, while we were at the bus transfer station, the Lord allowed us to have another great conversation with someone there. Mike was able to speak at length with a woman who had attended church with he and Kim several years back. This woman was no longer in church, but hungry to have fellowship once again. We were blessed on Sunday to have her with us. We also had another man with us on Sunday whom we had met a few weeks ago as he was seeking shelter. We are thankful that the people of the area are beginning to search us out. This was reaffirmed today as a woman who had attended our opening Sunday asked if we were still meeting and indicated her desire to come again with her grandson. On the job front I have had 2 interviews already this week and have another scheduled tomorrow. The positions require a number of interviews and testing, but I am starting to get a considerable ways into the process with each one. The Lord has also helped me rule out the things that have not been a good fit. I will be glad to see this process finish out so I can get focused on firming up our financial foundation. Tom Blackaby and I have been working on our travel plans for October and I am so excited about our time together in India. I look forward to seeing Pastor Paul once again and finally spending face to face time with Pastor Santhosh. Yesterday was my talk radio interview on Embracing God’s Best. I did not receive a call in number before the broadcast, so we were scrambling to get connected on the front end. The interview went so quickly, that we didn’t even get into the ministry of Simplicity; however, it was exactly what God wanted spoken.

Challenges, victories and other miscellaneous ramblings

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.  This weekend was a wonderful weekend in our ministry. Carol and Kim spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday at a women’s conference that was life changing for both of them in a number of ways. From my observation, both of them came back with less baggage and greater freedom. Saturday was our second week of passing out water at the bus transfer station. Within an hour we had distributed over 200 bottles of cold water. I had a conversation with Norberta, who wanted me to have some copies of her Watchtower and Awake magazines. She explained to me that she didn’t understand the Bible, so she used those magazines for her Biblical teaching. Several times she stated to me: “I work as hard as I can in hopes that God will give me His Spirit.” As much as she would allow me to, I spoke to her about God’s grace that is all sufficient. In the end she allowed me to pray for her. She then went and offered her magazines to another man, who simply said, “I would rather have a Bible.” One of the things I need to quickly locate is a very inexpensive way to load up on some pocket sized Bibles. My other notable encounter was with a woman, who said my son looked like Beelzebub. She went on to tell me about the possessed rat that lived under the refrigerator. She questioned Mike about the demonic spirit in the water we were offering, insisting that only Nestle was pure. I asked the Lord to set her free. During the weekend, Kim and Carol met Bernice and they both agreed that she and her husband may be the first of many people of peace we have been praying for. Mark and Bernice were called by the Lord to come to Corpus Christi from Syracuse, NY last year. Saturday night Mark called and asked where the church was and yesterday they spent the day with us. This couple is amazingly gifted and their own personal stories of deliverance were powerful. I am looking forward to watching how God uses them in this city. Saturday afternoon, Carol had an hour long talk with our neighbor. Next Sunday she, her family and a best friend are going to join us. We have been praying for the Lord to give us this opportunity. The highlight of my weekend was late yesterday afternoon. We had set up a canopy in front of the church and cooked hot dogs. As per usual we cooked more than enough for anyone who just happened to come by. Yesterday, no one was coming by until a young man walked up…a young man we had last seen nearly 6 months ago. His countenance had changed, there was humility in his words…God has used 6 months of wandering to soften his heart. We all rejoiced and loved on him. Tomorrow I will be taking him to Alice, TX to see his mother…she hasn’t seen him since he left home a few years ago. We are praying for great healing to take place. A new challenge (seems like an old challenge) has surfaced in our lives. The landlord dropped by Saturday to inform us that she was going to put the house on the market beginning August 1st. This has already happened to us 2 other times since arriving in Corpus Christi in January of 2007. So here we are with only Carol’s part time income, struggling to make ends meet, possibly needing to move; however, through it all we have a confidence that God’s answer will be beyond our wildest dreams. On the income front, I had two interviews last Thursday that may lead to more interviews in the coming weeks. I find myself tired…I either want to enter into my new professional role and get on with it or see the Lord provide in a way that keeps me on the course He set me on. This in between, not knowing, not able to pay the bills period is weighing on my spirit…I daily give it over to Him, but I get reminded very strongly of my circumstance quite regularly. I know that He is molding and shaping me into the vessel He’s had in mind for all of eternity…so I trust even when I don’t want to.

Amazed and Yearning

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.  Today I received a number of testimonies from Kenya and Uganda that are overwhelming and humbling. Once again I am awestruck, how God can use an ordinary man like me as His instrument to do only that which He can do. I have seen some of these types of things before on my visits to India; however, the Lord did things in Africa that I had never even imagined. As seems to always be the case, I find myself yearning for more. Why does the anointing of God seem so strong when I’m overseas and almost non-existent at times when I am here? The people of Corpus Christi need the touch of Christ just as desperately as the people of Kitale, Bukwo, Kapchesoy, Madurai or Chennai. The only answer I seem to come away with is a spirit of unbelief. It is said in scripture that when Jesus returned to His hometown, He was able to perform only a few miracles….the problem unbelief. Our city, our state, our nation all desperately need the life altering touch of Jesus…what must change in me to be used the same way here that I am used overseas?

Preparing for Kenya/Uganda

It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.   I’ve been watching the clock tick by quickly and was finding myself wrestling with doubts about my upcoming trip to Africa. The Lord has spoken clearly on several occassions directing me to make this journey, but things didn’t seem to be coming together. Today the Lord began to clear the path in front of me. This afternoon I was handed an envelope that covered my airfare to and from Nairobi. There was enough extra for me to get my anti-malaria pills and a yellow fever vaccination. My wife and I both find ourselves eager to see how God provides the remaining resources for my in country travel. I am also thrilled, because my partner pastor in Kenya asked if I had a spare laptop that he could use for the Bible college. It just so happens I have one that simply needs to have the power button fixed. I was so glad that I can meet that need for him.

Foundation Work

It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.   At the beginning of the year, as Mike and I prayed, the Lord impressed upon us that this would be a year of building the foundational pieces of our ministry. As we enter into the second month of the year, I find this to be very true. The Lord has had us evaluating our role in benevolence and our roles as ministers. Carol and I moved to the Island opening a new place of ministry to us. We are more clearly seeing who the Lord is molding through us and those that God is using to walk beside us. The Lord used our housing turmoil to continue to flush pockets of flesh out of my soul. As we look forward to the spring, I have been invited to attend the graduation activities of our Bible college in Uganda. This group of 37 are the first graduates of the first Bible college in their region of Uganda. Simplicity Solutions is also slowly taking shape, but sales are coming slow. The Lord is once again showing me that He alone is the Lord of the harvest.

Finally!

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.   Today, I was finally able to complete the certificate of occupancy process with the city. After multiple inspections, hours of waiting and an open faced toilet seat…we’re finally done. Tonight’s Organic Group was great. We have been ministering to a family that my wife has gotten to know through contact at my children’s school. This week one of their family members passed away and I showed up a few minutes after her passing. I had a chance to minister to the grieving husband and tonight he called asking if he could join us for Organic Group. I think we will develop a great relationship in the days to come.

Catching up

Editor’s Note:This post was written during the early days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the raw process of listening, letting go, and learning to follow Jesus into something beautifully simple and deeply alive.   With Thanksgiving I’ve gotten behind on the blog. So let me give you a quick rundown of some of the happenings over the extended weekend. On Thursday we spent the morning at Mission 911. Mission 911 is around the corner from our church building in the South Bluff Park area of Corpus Christi. Mission 911 offers people the opportunity to get back on their feet with food, shelter, spiritual food and a sense of purpose. Mission 911 had already held their Thanksgiving celebration the week before, so our purpose was simple…hang out and get to know people. We spent Wednesday evening baking cookies, pastries and other treats for the residents to enjoy. Once we arrived, we laid out the goodies and spent our time getting to know people. I had the opportunity to minister to a man who had been a resident the year before. His wife had left him recently and he arrived that morning looking to connect with the counselor that had helped him in the past. As we talked, he shared that he had given up hope and didn’t know how he could press on. By the time he left, God had done a work within Him. Just as he knew God had brought him up from the depths a year before, He also knew that God was willing to walk with Him through these dark days as well. Our greatest impact during the day was with the neighborhood children. We have been asked to consider starting something for the children on Saturdays and will be praying through that in the coming days. About 2 weeks ago, the ministry was given a 1992 Jaguar. The car is currently in my driveway and not running, as the fuel system needs some work. On Saturday one of the men from the church and I spent a good portion of the day dismantling the fuel system, only to find out that the fuel pump we had was too large. This week we will try to complete the work and sell the car to further the ministry of Simplicity. On Sunday, Mike preached his first message. He kept telling me he was terrified, but God spoke through him in spite of any fears he may have had. The video of his message is on the www.simplicitycc.org website under “media.” Over the weekend, I began working with some e-commerce ideas I have had. I am hoping to develop a business model that can be developed to help support future church planters and ministry leaders. I currently have two websites up and running www.luvmyhog.com and www.healthmartxpress.com. I will be looking to develop a marketing strategy that can be cross pollinated for future use by other planters. The development of a secular business model has become somewhat of a priority for me, as I realize that the one stumbling block for many potential Simplicity leaders will be the question of supporting their families, since one of the values of Simplicity Church is the use of bi-vocational and self-supporting pastors.

The Weekend in Review

Editor’s Note:This post was written during the early days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the raw process of listening, letting go, and learning to follow Jesus into something beautifully simple and deeply alive.   Last week, the ministry was given a 1992 Jaguar that needs a new fuel pump and fuel filter. Other than that it seems to be in working condition. Saturday a man showed up at the house and asked if the Jaguar was for sale. I told him that it would be, but I wanted to get it running first. I explained that it had been donated to our ministry. The man kept asking me what I wanted for it. I told him that I was unsure, but I gave him blue book values and said that if it was running, I would be looking for a certain amount and if it wasnt’ running I would be looking for a certain amount. The man said he would like to buy it, but if it was running what he really would like to do is trade a 1997 quad-cab Chevrolet pickup for it. Immediately, I saw prayers being answered. Mike and I are both in the process of downsizing our debt loads to become much more fluid and flexible with the ministry. He will be working on selling his car and I am asking the Lord to help me pay down the note on my truck so I can sell it. The Lord impressed upon me that this truck would be a ministry provision for both of us. Since Mike and I both ride our motorcycles for regular commuting, we don’t particularly need a second vehicle every day of the week. The provision of this truck would allow us to both utilize it as needed and would be beneficial in our ministry as we seek to touch lives with the hands of Jesus. The man will be checking back with me next weekend to see if I have the Jaguar running, your prayers and knowledge of Jaguar automobiles are both welcomed. Since launching Simplicity, we have had the privilege of getting to know a young woman who has beaten an addiction, staying clean for over two years now. She recently completed a job training program and has also come to faith in Jesus Christ. One of the desires of her heart has been to have her husband join her as a close partner in faith. Yesterday we had the privilege of seeing her husband join her in our Sunday celebration. God is so awesome. One of the ladies who had attended Simplicity our first weekend was having difficulty finding our building yesterday and nearly gave up on coming. On the last attempt, I was able to guide her to the building and this morning, I learned why she was having such difficulty Yesterday the words of Christ set her free from a burden she has been carrying with her for 30 years. Nothing compares to the freedom Christ brings to our lives.

The Power of Simplicity

Editor’s Note:This post was written in the very earliest days of what would become the Simplicity Church Network. It reflects the process of letting go of old models, listening to Jesus, and learning to follow the Spirit into a new way of being the Church.   Tonight we held our first Organic Group at my house. There were 10 people gathered together representing 4 families. We began by praying and asking the Holy Spirit to be our leader this evening and then went where He led. Before the evening was over, we had seen profound truth come from the mouths of a 7 year old and an 11 year old; tears flowed as the living Word of God moved into our hearts and as the body was edified by the ministry of its members. We ended our evening gathered around the Lord’s table as we partook of the bread and cup “in Remembrance” of Christ. My wife summed it up best…”I could feel the spirit of God moving in our interactions tonight.”
